Pocket Universe Series
Pocket Universe
In Cixin Liu’s novel Death’s End, the pocket universe is an engineered space partitioned off, but not disconnected from our universe. This pocket universe can be as expansive as a solar system or as small as a farm. Painting, more specifically abstract painting, has provided artists a means to demonstrate this phenomenon in advance of the sciences.
Abstract painting possesses the ability to be both expansive and compact at the same time. Non-objective art further stretches this ambiguity through manipulation of the formal elements, line and color. The exhibited works would intentionally conflate the macro/micro reading of composition with tightly composed larger paintings, dilating and expanding across the viewer’s field of vision. Smaller pared down paintings will unfurl and expand with close inspection.
